Introduction
We all take pictures. We have been doing it for almost two hundred years, courtesy of two French gentlemen, Daguerre and Niepps. The number of people who snap a picture or two every day has been growing steadily and seriously exploded in recent years. Times, when photography was something just short of black magic, are long gone. It is the advent of a new generation of smartphones that has made the technical aspect of photography almost irrelevant. The result is before our eyes: billions of pictures appear on the Internet every day, and the overwhelming preponderance of them will have become forgotten when the Sun rises the next morning. Can we do better yet? Yes, we can! We already now know how to freeze motion, why not take the next step and unfreeze it?
This three-day workshop is for photographers who want to expand their skillset into the fascinating world of the motion picture, i.e., cinema. It will be especially useful to those who are interested in how to do it on a tight budget.
What will you learn?
- General principles shared photography and cinema
- Basic principles of cinematography: camera angles, framings, point of view, and camera movement.
- Cinematic visual language: negative space, layering, dynamic composition, color contrast, color palette
- Cinematic storytelling: a story to the screenplay to storyboard
- Cinema with a smartphone: how to maximize the capabilities of your mobile phone to get some seriously badass footage
What will you do?
You will have an opportunity to participate in the production of a real short film, from pre-pro to editing to color grading. You can be on both sides of the camera and try yourself in different roles, from a cameraman to a lighting specialist (yes, we will teach you!), from a boom operator to a potential movie star (yes, you will be acting, but no promises here 😜).
What will you need?
No special equipment is required. Of course, if you own iPhone 12 Pro, it will be a super welcome addition to our technical arsenal consisting of Leica SL and Panasonic Lumix S1 cameras, and a Blackmagic Design recorder. Naturally, there will be more toys to play with, but we do not want you to get bored while reading through the impossibly long list.
Housekeeping Fineprint
- We observe COVID-19 restriction rules. Masks during class are required, hand sanitizer will be provided.
- No consumption of alcohol and other mind-altering substances is allowed. What we do is plenty to alter your mind.
- We don’t do anything obscene, but classes are for grown-ups. Hence no minors with the exception of models/actors.
