Calamity • A Short Film Shot In Collaboration With Red Cat Studios

As a part of our live workshop on the fundamentals of Cinematography, we produced a short film from scratch. Everything from writing a script to storyboarding to casting and eventually shooting was done in three days of a dark, cold Russian winter.  The actual principal photography took just five hours. Our students worked super hard in pre-production and on both sides of the camera on the day of shooting.

For filming, we used the following equipment:

  • camera bodies: Leica SL and Leica SL2
  • lenses: Leica Vario-Elmarit 24-90/2.8-4 and  Leica Summilux R 1.4/50 Cine Mod
  • video/sound recorder:  Blackmagic Video Assist 4K
  • Manfrotto Cine tripod  with a fluid head
  • two Profoto studio strobes with 300W modeling lights in  150x90cm softboxes, as continuous sources of light

For post-production of the 4K footage and sound mastering:

  • Mac Pro 2013
    6-core Xeon processor
    32 GB RAM
    Dual AMD D700 internal graphics
AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 external card
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio 16
  • Apple Logic Pro X

We want to use this opportunity to cordially thank Leica USA for providing the cameras and lenses free of charge.
